BABYLONIAN CLAY TABLET WITH TRIPLES, IN THE NEWS

This ancient tablet lists 15 perfect triples and has received attention in a new study by Dr Mansfield and UNSW Associate Professor Norman Wildberger published in Historia Mathematica, the official journal of the International Commission on the History of Mathematics.

Dr Wildberger says "It opens up new possibilities not just for modern mathematics research, but also for mathematics education. With Plimpton 322 we see a simpler, more accurate trigonometry that has clear advantages over our own."

DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PHILIPPINES by Ike Prudente

Since the publication of my second book Algebra Made Easy as Arithmetic last March, I have been invited by schools districts and universities around the Philippines to speak before their students and teachers. This gave me the chance to introduce Vedic Mathematics and show them that VM is more systematic and unified than the traditional Math taught in Philippine schools today.
Last July I was able to conduct a workshop at the national convention of the Mathematics Teacher’s Association of the Philippines – Tertiary Level and I met many college and university Math department heads who expressed interest in VM. Just last month, I spoke before about 400 students and teachers at the Palawan State University in Puerto Princesa City. I may have made quite an impression with the audience because I was again invited to return to Puerto Princesa on the last week of September to speak in two universities, to a group of college scholars and to some public school teachers who will receive 100 copies of my books donated by the local Rotary Club.
Last month, I was also invited to speak before the students and faculty of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University, one of the best engineering schools in Southern Philippines. They want to develop a remedial course for Algebra and trigonometry for engineering students and also an elective course in Vedic Mathematics for the college of Teacher Education.
We are working on a Math worktext series for Grades 7 to 10 with a team of experienced public school Math teachers. Each volume is somewhat two-books-in-one. The main book of course follows the government prescribed curriculum while we add “Math is Fun “ and “Math is Easy” sections which are of course based on VM on most lessons. The publisher plans to print a total of 120,000 copies of the books. If the project pushes through as well as we hope to it be, then VM will be introduced in most part of the Philippines.

End of article.
