VERA STEVENS – PEBBLE MATHS
This term I am teaching classes one to 6 at one school and class four at another. The level of Mathematics at the beginning of term was virtually non-existent. I cannot understand what has happened to teaching Mathematics in primary school. I have proceeded at break neck speed for classes five and six (ages 11 and 12). And the children are loving it. I have introduced digit adding in relation to Multiples of three, six and nine and also tests for addition subtraction and multiplication. I have another three weeks till the end of term and intend to keep up the pace. The children are appreciating the lessons to such an extent that class six claps at the end of each lesson. I have never experienced that before! They are so appreciating the fact that they are now able to add subtract multiply and divide.
I must tell you a funny story from Friday (Class four Mullumbimby). My friend Julie is the teacher and rather unusually she made me a cup of tea in the middle of class and put it in front of the blackboard. She brought my attention to it and I picked up the cup, had a sip and said to the class “ Isn’t that wonderful ! I’ve never had that happen to me before.” One boy in the front row said “ Better than a Retirement home!”
I have never laughed so much in all my life. The things that children say.
