PEBBLE MATHS IN NEW ZEALAND

I have had an amazing two week teaching trip to New Zealand and I’ve come home very happy and excited for the future of Pebble Maths in the Māori schools. I taught every day from nine till three for two weeks which is a big ask of myself, but it was such a joyful experience so it is not as difficult as I worried about. The school has children from five years to 18 years of age. 83 children in all so composite classes. This was a new experience for me also. The children only speak Māori at school so the knowledge of mathematical terms in English was a challenge. For example even 10÷9 equals one remainder one, I had to learn the Māori word for remainder. I am on a steep learning curve to assimilate as much of the language as I can, especially pertaining to arithmetic. The teachers were wonderful, enthusiastic, excited and willing to learn. A very far cry from what I usually come up against in my own backyard.  So now going forward we need to translate the Pebble Maths teachers manual into the Māori language and incorporate their cultural legends regarding number and calculation. We are hoping to organise a teacher training seminar in the last week of the summer holidays that would be end of January. I have learned so much about the Māori people. Their big heartedness, kindness and love for their children. It was a transformative experience for me and it has been hard to settle back into my Monday existence here. I can’t stop thinking about them and I am looking forward so much to working with them again. I shall keep you informed as to the progress of the teaching seminar and the book translation.

EMAIL RECEIVED from Saša Janiška

Our U13 daughter has developed taste from maths and once, when I was explaining something to her, I mentioned calculus and upon hearing about it she became immediately attracted with the concept asking me to
explain it...

I did promise to do it "once"...then she told me one day while having a pause in the school between classes, she happened to be in the "computer" classroom and was researching on the Internet about Calculus to the great amazement of her peers.

Then I concluded to go in action as soon as possible trying to find some adequate material, but quickly I was reminded about "The Art of Calculus" which I purchased previously...

During her winter holidays we started working on the book… finished chapter 3 "Gradient of the Tangent" and provided "optimisation" example from the 4th chapter.

She likes it a lot and I derive a great pleasure teaching it...being sad for not having such a great material when was involved with the calculus...

Thank you very much for providing such great books about VM!
